The PCRC Area C Command, Surulere, Lagos, under the Chairmanship of Rotarian Akibu Bankole yesterday June 11th, 2024, in conjunction with the Nigeria Police in the same Area C Command , assembled all the stakeholders in the community and security personnel at a Town hall meeting. The theme of the Town hall meeting is " THE PRISON CALLED ILLICIT USE OF DRUGS: THE WAY OUT.
The Area Commander of Area C, Surulere, ACP Ayoola Oladunni mfr, set the ball rolling with his welcome address, in which he called for a complete collaborative efforts at eradicating drug business in all ramifications.
The lead discussant at the meeting, which was attended by traditional rulers,community & religious leaders, political top shots, Police, Military NDLEA, Lagos Neighbourhood personnel, was the Medical Director of the Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, Dr. Olugbemga Owoeye.
He, in his brief but concise paper outlined the different types of drugs, narcotics and substances that cause serious damage to the brain & body system.
He educated attendees on the menace and damage done to both the human body and the society at large.
The Ogun State PCRC Chairman, Ven. (Dr) Samson Kunle Popoola (JP), who represented the National Chairman, Alhaji Ibraheem Olaniyan, gave kudos to the Police authority for the worthy initiative, complimented by PCRC.
He called on the government, parents, community & religious leaders & all concerned to do everything humanly possible to eradicate drug markets, as according to him, if there is no demand, supply will not thrive.
The Lagos State PCRC Chairman, Apostle Kehinde Sowemimo and other PCRC top shots, which included the National Vice Chairman, South West, Prince Sunny Yemi Adenowo , were also in attendance.
Papers and lectures were delivered by representatives of various corporate organisations, such as Country Representative, United Nations Office on drugs & crime in Nigeria, National Crime Agency, NDLEA, and a seasoned administrator from the University of Lagos.
They all called on government to dismantle the drug cartels in all the nooks and crannies of Lagos State, adding that the market thrives a lot.
A former drug addict, who has become completely reformed, highlighted the dangers and damages that drug causes to the body, as well as the reputation of the society.
He said that the government needs to do more than paying lip service to the menace as different drugs are consumed by the high & mighty in the society, as well as those on the lower run of the ladder.
The Chairman of Surulere Local Government, Hon. Bamidele Yusuf & a member of House of Representatives, Hon. Fawus Laguda, representing Surulere constituency, both promised to take the fight to the doorsteps of drug markets in the area, for a complete eradication.
Medals, Certificates and Awards were presented to eminent participants and students of various schools that represented their institutions.
On the whole, it was a well attended programme, as the venue was filled to capacity, that had representatives of transport unions, students from various schools, while the Lagos State Police band added colour to the ceremony.
The Townhall meeting took place at Arcade Hall and Event Centre , Surulere, Lagos .
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade mni psc, also sent a goodwill message.
